Doppler echocardiographic evaluation of prosthetic valve function.

چکیده
Owing to its versatile, non-invasive, radiation-free, and low cost nature, Doppler echocardiography is undoubtedly the method of choice to evaluate prosthetic valve function. This evaluation follows the same principles used for the evaluation of native valves, with some important specifics and caveats described in this article. A complete echocardiography includes two dimensional imaging of the prosthetic valve, evaluation of valve leaflet/ occluder morphology and mobility, measurement of the transprosthetic gradients and valve effective orifice area (EOA), estimation of the degree of regurgitation, evaluation of left ventricular size and systolic function, and calculation of systolic pulmonary arterial pressure.

Evaluation of Björk-Shiley prosthetic valves by real-time two-dimensional Doppler echocardiographic flow mapping.
We studied the value of two-dimensional Doppler echocardiographic color flow mapping for identifying normal transvalve flow profiles and valve malfunction in 20 patients with Björk-Shiley prosthetic valves. Seven patients had Björk-Shiley prosthetic valves in the aortic position alone, seven in the mitral position, and six had prosthetic valves in both the aortic and mitral positions. In 10 pat...
متن کاملNew recommendations for evaluation of prosthetic valves with echocardiography and doppler ultrasound.
Valve replacement remains common in the adult patient despite advances in valve repair. While a physical examination can alert the clinician to the presence of valve dysfunction, diagnostic methods are often needed to assess the function of the prosthesis. Echocardiography with Doppler is currently the method of choice for non-invasive evaluation of prosthetic valves. A recently published "Guid...
متن کاملEvaluation of prosthetic heart valves by transesophageal echocardiography: problems, pitfalls, and timing of echocardiography.
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is especially suitable for examination of prosthetic valves because of the proximity of the esophagus to the heart and absence of interference with lungs and ribs. This article reviews normal and abnormal morphologic characteristics of prosthetic valves such as spontaneous echocontrast, microbubbles, strands, sutures, vegetations or thrombus. Doppler echoc...
متن کاملCMR to Evaluate Bioprosthetic Aortic Stenosis?
SEE PAGE 785 W ith an aging population and the emergence of transcatheter valve replacement (1), the evaluation of bioprosthetic valve anatomy and function is of increasing importance. Traditional “tried and true” methods of assessing bioprosthetic valve dysfunction have relied on 2-dimensional echocardiographic techniques that evaluate leaflet morphology and mobility, as well as Doppler-based ...
متن کاملDoppler echocardiographic characteristics of normal and dysfunctioning prosthetic valves in the tricuspid and mitral position.
The Doppler echocardiographic characteristics of 70 prosthetic valves in 35 patients are reported. Twenty nine patients had a Björk-Shiley prosthesis in both mitral and tricuspid positions and six had Carpentier-Edwards valves in both sites. Five of the patients had abnormal tricuspid prostheses on the basis of clinical and echocardiographic criteria. Pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography was us...
